A simple mindfulness routine for teens during exam stress
A short, realistic routine for teens who need a pause between study sessions without being told to simply relax.

Make the pause small
Teens often hear mindfulness as a request to become calmer immediately. A more useful approach is to make the first step small: one page, one breath or one sentence about what is happening right now.
The routine is not a test of performance. It is a way to notice thoughts, body sensations and emotions before choosing the next action.
A three-step routine
Try this between study blocks or before bed. It takes about five minutes and can be adapted to a notebook, a journal or a voice note.
- Name what is present: ‘My chest feels tight and my mind is racing.’
- Choose a focus: five slow breaths, the sound of the room or one object nearby.
- Write one next step: ‘Open the book for ten minutes’ or ‘Ask for help.’
Make privacy part of the plan
A private journal can help teens notice patterns over time. Keep it optional, lock it away if privacy matters, and avoid using entries as a way to monitor or judge them.
