Boredom is not always a problem
When children say they are bored, they may be asking for more choice rather than asking for entertainment. A little unstructured space can support imagination, but children still need a few accessible invitations.
Seven low-pressure invitations
- Make a tiny museum from objects found around the house.
- Invent a recipe with three ingredients and let the child name it.
- Create a comic strip about an everyday problem.
- Build a card or wrapper for someone who cannot be present.
- Use a mandala page as a prompt for colours, patterns and moods.
- Start a five-minute story where each person adds one sentence.
- Ask the child to teach you how to do something they enjoy.
Let the activity stay unfinished
Not every activity needs to become a project. A child who colours for three minutes and then stops has still practised choice and attention. You can revisit the idea another day without adding pressure.
